Philips Hue – the world’s smartest LED-bulb?

I’m certainly a fan of the proverb “there’s an app for that“, but how far can you really take it? Quite so apparently, Philips now suggest we fill our homes with “smart” LED-bulbs Hue, which will offer app controlled lighting. Basically you can pre-program your bulbs to switch on, off, dim or change color. The press release promises:

Building on its innovation capabilities, today Philips unveils hue, the world’s smartest web-enabled LED home lighting system. Philips hue signals a new era in home lighting both in the way we think about and experience light in our homes. It allows you to create and control the light using your smartphone or tablet. Bringing endless possibilities to help you get creative and help you personalize your lighting to suit yours and your family’s lifestyle, Philips hue is available exclusively from Apple stores from 30th October. A starter pack includes three bulbs¹ that simply screw into your existing lamps, and a bridge that you plug into your home Wi-Fi router. Simply download the hue app to start experiencing light in a completely new way.

Introduction packs start at US$199 / € 199 / £179 while the bulbs themselves retails at US$59 / €59 / £49 and are only available via your local Apple Store. More info on Philips dedicated website meethue.com.

The iPad apps you need

The iPad App List of Awesome (or the apps you need for your iPad) – 2012 Edition

I’ve been asked, “Which apps should I get for my new iPad?” a lot lately, so I thought I’d make an effort and put a proper list together. Having had the iPad for over a year (by March 2011), I’ve gone through a pile load of apps with varying quality. The ones listed below are the ones that have stuck and that are now faithful companions wherever my iPad and me goes. The total amounts to about $60 spent but all of them are worth it if you need the specific functionality described. There are of course many free alternatives so start looking around if you feel like you should keep your wallet out of the equation. Also, “universal” means that the apps will play just as nicely with your iPhone if you have one of those as well.

Now updated for the 3rd generation iPad.

The “App Edition”

Warner have just released two rather surprising apps to the iOS App Store. Two of Christopher Nolan’s movies, Inception and The Dark Knight now have their very own apps. The not so surprising content includes (free) the first five minutes of the theatrical release in addition to select bonus material such as games, trivia, soundtracks and soundboards. The really surprising part is that you can, via an in-app purchase, get the full featured movie to stream or download. The app is localized to quite a few different languages, complete with subtitling. Also, while watching the film, you can share your favorite movie quotes through Facebook and Twitter and watch a feed of social networking chatter directly related to the movie in real-time. Novel.
